The Library of Virginia offers annual literary awards to Virginia authors or books with Virginia themes.
Maryland Humanities Council
Maryland Humanities Council sponsors grants, a speaker’s bureau, annual events such as Maryland History Day and the Summer Chautauqua, and runs the Maryland Center for the Book.
Maryland State Arts Council
Maryland State Arts Council offers grants, advocacy, cultural planning, cultural diversity arts registry, newsletter. Also hosts a state-wide Writers in the Schools Program through its Arts in Education grant program.
Mid Atlantic Arts Foundation
The Mid Atlantic Arts Foundation offers grants, advocacy, artist and critic exchanges, newsletter. Covers the following states: Delaware, DC, Maryland, New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania, Virginia. West Virginia, and (strangely, since it’s not in the Mid-Atlantic) the US Virgin Islands.
National Endowment for the Arts
The NEA offers individual arts grants to writers across the country. Poets and translators are eligible in alternate years. Program grants to arts organizations cover all US states, territories, and military bases. Special initiatives for rural and inner-city arts groups.
National Endowment for the Humanities
The NEH awards grants and awards in several humanities categories given annually to cultural institutions (museums, archives, libraries, colleges, public TV, radio stations) and individual scholars.
Prince George’s Arts and Humanities Council
The PG Arts Council offers grants, public art, and an artist registry.
Virginia Commission for the Arts
The VCA awards grants, training, and advocacy. State-wide Writers in the Schools program. Hosts annual Arts Advocacy Day in Richmond, and an annual conference.
Virginia Foundation for the Humanities
VFH offers grants, and hosts programs including the Virginia Folklife Program, the Center for Media and Culture, and the Virginia Shakespeare Initiative.
West Virginia Commission on the Arts
The West Virginia Commission on the Arts offers grants, technical assistance, an artist roster, and a calendar of events and exhibits. Also publishes an on-line listing of writers groups, and has published a literary map of the state.
