The Young Writers Workshop of the University of Virginia seeks residential staff to mentor teenage writers in grades 9-12. Six week position: June 16 to July 26. Staff collaborate to develop and teach genre-specific classes (fiction, nonfiction, song, script, and poetry). Classes are held daily, in which students are mentored in both reading and writing. Related responsibilities include: individual conferences; guidance in the rewriting process, participation in staff readings; collaboration with colleagues on programming and supervision of students; and co-hosting visiting writers. Residential staff are expected to attend parent and student orientation sessions, staff meetings, and training sessions. They may sponsor student staffs, offering elective short-courses, and evening and/or weekend activities. Experience teaching or mentoring required; must have completed two or more years of college.
