Playa sits at the base of Winter Ridge, which rises to 7,200 feet at the northwestern edge of the Great Basin in south-central Oregon. Directly east of Playa lies Summer Lake, at an elevation of 4,200 feet. The lake is about 20 miles long and five miles wide. It is a playa: a desert lake that is shallow in the winter and usually evaporates by late summer. The Summer Lake basin, abundant with both desert and forest flora and fauna, is cradled between the open sagebrush steppe of eastern Oregon and the rocky, forested mountains of the Fremont-Winema National Forest. Two types of Residency programs: Fellowship Residencies are provided without a fee during two multi-month sessions each year. Woonsocket Neigborhood Development Corporation (401) 762-0993. Year-long residencies for a single community-friendly professional artist (and family) with free rent in spacious 3-bedroom apartment, in exchange for 5/hours per week working with local kids. Woonsocket is a former mill city located in the Blackstone River Valley National Heritage Corridor, 20 minutes from Providence. All media welcome: visual arts, film, video, theater, computer art, storytelling, dance, poetry or other writers, folk arts, crafts. “We believe in the importance and transformative power of the arts as part of a comprehensive community revitalization effort,” says Executive Director Joe Garlick.

Residency for up to 5 writers at a time in Gilman, IL, two hours south of Chicago, on a secluded lake surrounded by 32 acres of woodlands and farmland. Property includes hiking trails, a meditation garden, and an outdoor running track. All meals provided (vegetarian, low-fat, low-sodium fare). Open September and October only. Writing Between the Vines, various locations in California and western Canada. Offers three to four short-term retreats (one week or less) on vineyards each winter and spring for individual writers. Residents are provided with free housing, but are responsible for travel, food, and all other expenses. Writing By Writers, PO Box 60544, Palo Alto, CA, 94306. Offers two residency programs. Wolf House is located in NE Minneapolis and offers two one-week residencies (one in Spring, one in Summer). Mill House is located in Bend, OR and offers one two-week residency each Winter for up to 6 writers. At Mill House, each writer lives in a 1 or 2-bedroom cottage (and there is a shared hot tub). For both residencies, there is no fee for lodging, but residents are responsible for their own meals and transportation. Artists live rent-free for three four-week periods a year in the furnished Grotto House in the eastern section of the park. Majestic desert environment on the Colorado Plateau. Open to professional visual artists in all disciplines, as well as performing and literary artists. Artists asked to donate one finished work and present two public programs (one in the park, and one at Southern Utah Univ.). Works completed under this program “contribute to the public understanding and appreciation” of the Park and reflect the NPS mission to preserve and protect Zion’s cultural and natural resources.
